Big focus on sustainability

Sun Chemical, a member of the DIC Group, is a leading producer of packaging and graphic solutions, color and display technologies, functional products, electronic materials, and products for the automotive and healthcare industries. At Interpack 2023 in Dusseldorf, the company highlighted its unique position as a provider of inks, coatings, adhesives, packaging design, color management and sustainability analysis for the packaging industry.

"Except films, we provide all kinds of solutions for the packaging industry. Sun Chemical has solutions to the challenges faced by the packaging market across five key packaging themes – flexible, paper, folding cartons, labels and metal deco. It has shown visitors how it is constantly working with its parent company, DIC, to develop and promote sustainable solutions," Nicolas Betin, director of product strategy EMEA, packaging solutions and global sustainability business leader at Sun Chemical, told Packaging South Asia.

Solutions for a wide spectrum of packaging applications

At the Sun Chemical stand, the company showcased an extensive range of solutions, including SunBar Aerobloc chlorine-free oxygen barrier varnish, high heat-resistant SunSys surface varnishes, and combined heat seal/anti-mist varnish called Vistaclear in a single layer for mono-material PET lidding and trays packaging.

The company promoted the SunStrato Duratort polyurethane inks, which are PVC- and nitrocellulose-free solutions suitable for flexo and gravure lamination. It also showcased the SunStrato Aqualam range of water-based inks for flexible packaging applications.

For paper packaging applications, the company displayed the SunVisto AquaGreen range of water-based inks. The SunPak DirectFood Plus series of sheetfed offset inks and SunSpec SunStar overprint varnishes are for use by folding carton converters to print on the inside of food packaging, where a direct food contact can happen.

Certified by Vincotte-TÜV for use on ‘OK to compost’ packaging, Sun Chemical's SunUno Solimax multi-purpose ink system is suitable for surface printing and lamination for various end-use applications, such as lidding materials, medical laminates and food packaging for confectionery and snack food, and provides a single platform that can cover multiple end-use applications.

Sun Chemical showcased the SunLam family of compostable lamination adhesives consisting of water-based and solvent-free adhesives designed to meet the needs of all the major flexible packaging applications for food packaging.

Betin said that in line with growth in digital technology, Sun Chemical is increasingly focusing on providing sustainable products and solutions that are compatible with digital equipment to enable printers and converters to take full advantage of the benefits of the digital printing process.

SunJet, its digital inkjet brand, showcased SunEvo, a broad range of digital coatings, and its complementary range of SunJet inkjet inks.

Talking about the Indian market, Betain said that DIC is a well-known brand in the country and India is an important market. "We are a global company and so we are present in the Indian market as well. DIC, which is our mother company, is a very well-known brand in India, which is a very exciting and important market," he concluded.

The impact, resilience, and growth of responsible packaging in a wide region are daily chronicled by Packaging South Asia.

A multi-channel B2B publication and digital platform such as Packaging South Asia is always aware of the prospect of new beginnings and renewal. Its 16-year-old print monthly, based in New Delhi, India hasdemonstrated its commitment to progress and growth. The Indian and Asian packaging industries have shown resilience in the face of ongoing challenges over the past three years.

As we present our publishing plan for 2023, India's real GDP growth for the financial year ending 31 March 2023 will reach 6.3%. Packaging industry growth has exceeded GDP growth even when allowing for inflation in the past three years.

The capacity for flexible film manufacturing in India increased by 33% over the past three years. With orders in place, we expect another 33% capacity addition from 2023 to 2025. Capacities in monocartons, corrugation, aseptic liquid packaging, and labels have grown similarly. The numbers are positive for most of the economies in the region – our platform increasingly reaches and influences these.

Even given the disruptions of supply chains, raw material prices, and the challenge of responsible and sustainable packaging, packaging in all its creative forms and purposes has significant headroom to grow in India and Asia. Our context and coverage engulf the entire packaging supply chain – from concept to shelf and further – to waste collection and recycling. We target brand owners, product managers, raw material suppliers, packaging designers and converters, and recyclers.

In an admittedly fragmented and textured terrain, this is the right time to plan your participation and marketing support communication – in our impactful and highly targeted business platform.
